A study measuring UV exposure among pool lifeguards at four U.S. locations found that more than 74% exceeded recommended occupational UV exposure limits — not because they weren't wearing protection, but because the protection wasn't designed for what the job actually demands. Sunscreen wears off. Cotton transmits UV. And here's what the spec sheets won't tell you: a shirt engineered for maximum UV blocking uses a denser, tighter weave — which also traps body heat.
